The Astrophysics Datacenter Executive Committee (ADEC) is coordinating the development of a system to facilitate the linking to on-line data. This system has three components: 1. Unique dataset identifiers. 2. A verification system for identifiers. 3. Permanent links to on-line data sets.
1. The ADEC has agreed on a naming scheme for data sets that allows for the unique identification of any data set. The ADEC data centers will clearly mark their data with these identifiers to allow the generation of links to these data.
2. Each data center has a utility that can check whether a data set identifier is a valid identifier at that center. A central verifier allows third parties access to these individual verifiers through a single portal.
3. The central verifier also provides permanent links to data sets through a central link forwarding system. This makes it possible to move data sets between data centers while maintaining the permanent links.
The ADEC plans to first use this system to implement the linking from the literature to on-line data in a collaboration with the AAS and the University of Chicago Press for the AAS journals.
