We describe an ongoing effort to increase synergy between laboratory measurements and astrophysical observations of magnetized plasmas by utilizing the available computational modeling capablity. Our goal is to directly relate physical insights derived from local measurements of reproducible plasmas in a controlled laboratory setting to remote observations of macroscopic dynamics of naturally occurring astrophysical plasmas, with particular emphasis on solar flares and CMEs. For this purpose, we use an initial value implicit adaptive multi-fluid MHD code HiFi for both 2D and 3D macroscopic simulations; as well as a particle-pushing code to track evolution of distributions of energetic particles in the dynamically evolving electro-magnetic fields computed with HiFi. We use the flexibilities afforded by the HiFi code, particularly in regard to various geometries, boundary conditions and specific systems of PDEs, to systematically study the effects of system's initial and boundary conditions on the plasma behavior both in laboratory and on the Sun. Additionally, we conduct limited scaling studies to determine how the various non-ideal effects, such as the plasma resistivity, anisotropic pressure tensor and heat conduction, affect the observable plasma characteristics in both systems. Early results and ongoing work will be presented. )
