A possible explanation is proposed for the observed peculiar flattening of some cD galaxies and for their alignment with the cluster's overall rotation. In the mechanism suggested, a cluster-sized protocloud experiencing Jeans instability will break down into galaxies. For a rotating protocloud, the galaxy that forms at the center (which in rich clusters is a cD) will carry, essentially, intrinsic angular momentum, while other galaxies, in addition, will carry orbital angular momentum. As a result, the cD will be oriented in the same way as the cluster, and the resulting flattening will be greater than may be expected from tidal theory.
