The shape of the bow shock surface is very important in modeling the shock location. Commonly rotational symmetry is assumed due to limited data coverage. Some models even attempted to fit the shock in three dimensions with a general second-order surface. However, the difference between an axially symmetric and a general three dimensional fit is small and can be caused by the averaging of the locations and/or upstream parameters, an intrinsic nature of many models. However, some phenomenological and MHD models [i.e, Farris and Russell (1994), Cairns and Lyon (1995)] predict only the bow shock standoff distance and so it is possible to implement an arbitrary shock shape to compare the model predictions with spacecraft observations. In this study, parabolic and hyperbolic model surfaces, symmetric about the aberrated X axis, have been used to compare to IMP~8 observations of the Earth bow shock. Both model shapes reprepresent the shock shape well with negligible differences for X>-40~RE. However, the focus of the paraboloid (hyperboloid) does not coincide with the center of Earth and is shifted ~1.6 (1.9) RE. Furthermore, IMP~8 observations suggest a slight asymmetry between the dawn and dusk flanks or the shock's symmetry axis is not aligned with the aberrated X axis.
