The formation height is determined for a shock wave resulting from the incidence of a meteor or an artificial object on the atmosphere. It is shown that the extinction of large slow sporadic meteors in the upper layers of the atmosphere is associated with the formation of shock waves. It is demonstrated that shock waves are not formed during the passage of very small particles (less than 0.001 mm in diameter) in the earth's atmosphere. The established criterion for shock-wave formation is used to evaluate the generation mechanism of meteor flares. It is shown that slow meteors, moving at a rate of 30 km/sec, produce flares at those heights where shock waves are generated.
