It is suggested in view of numerical calculations for white dwarf model atmospheres that, at optically transparent depths, layers of carbon can exist in the form of liquid droplets and graphite grains. The contribution of the condensate to the total opacity of the atmosphere will depend strongly on the model parameters, and may approach 100 percent.
