A model for the formation of QSO absorption lines is presented. In a wind driven by radiative acceleration, density waves occur which move with supersonic velocities relative to the outstreaming gas. The model follows from a hydrodynamic solution. It gives the high blue shift of the absorption systems relative to the emission-line system, the observed small line width of the absorption lines, and the observed column densities.
