The formalism of the KS-transformation of Kustaanheimo and Stiefel (1964) is derived from a quaternion formulation in vector notation. By this procedure, each step in the KS-transformation obtains an immediate geometrical interpretation. In particular, the KS-transformation appears as the Levi-Civita transformation formulated in a rotated coordinate system. Explicit formulas for the KS-transformation in the case of an elliptic Kepler motion in space are given.
