Nests of galaxies are defined as several (more than two) galaxies in contact with each other and often strongly distorted by mutual interaction. In the present paper the color, geometrical, and morphological characteristics of currently known galaxy nests are compared with those of ordinary galaxies and groups of galaxies. It is concluded that 5-15% of the total number of nests may be the evolutionary products of tight groups of galaxies (with diameter less than 100 kpc for total mass of 5 x 10 to the 11th solar masses). The origin of the remaining nests may be explained by different types of instabilities in certain flat galaxies, including transformation of one galaxy into a nest, or the interaction of two galaxies containing large amounts of gas.
