A solar-flare mechanism for the generation of geomagnetic variations is proposed which is based on the assumption that flares lead to the excitation of internal acoustic-gravity waves, which in turn excite a system of Sq currents. It is shown that a close agreement between theoretical and experimental values of the temporal and amplitude characteristics of geomagnetic variations tends to support the proposed mechanism.
