Michelson interferometry has been successfully applied in recent years to measure the physical dimensions of stellar objects. Interferometric franges at the receiving end of a telescope are numerically deconvolved to increase the acuity of the image and compensate for atmospheric blurring of the image. The accuracy of the angular measurements is enhanced by taking many consecutive sightings to serve as a statistical base for improving the resolution, especially for speckle interferometry (SI). The latter technique has been effective for precise measurement of the distance between Pluto and its moon Charon and the depths of stellar atmospheres. SI has more recently been used at IR wavelengths for studying stellar evolution and for probing circumsteller envelopes and planetary atmospheres. IR astronomy has been applied to gather data on stellar nurseries, interstellar matter and the possible existence of brown stars as compact, relatively cool companions which disturb the orbits of known stars. The NASA satellite IRAS provided imagery of protoplanetary clouds around nearby stars and will be followed by the launch of the Space Telescope in the 1980s and the ESA IR Observatory in the 1990s.
