SummaryIn later years a comprehensive literature has accumulated on stratigraphical classification and terminology and on stratigraphy in general. The present article tries to give an idea of the present status of some of the major problems. A threefold stratigraphical classification—lithostratigraphical, biostratigraphical and chronostratigraphical—seems to have been accepted by a majority of stratigraphers.
