Bl Lacertae Objects: Light Variations, Bl Lacertae Objects: Periods
Scientific paper
The authors present a method for finding the period of light variation in BL Lac objects. They find the long periods light variability in the BL Lac objects OJ 287, ON 231 and Mrk 421. Analysis and computing have shown that the data sample should span a very long time interval (about 100 years), covering at least six times the length of the periodicity being claimed, the possible period should refer to large amplitude variations and thus directly visible in the light curve. When the amplitude is low, far more than six times of the period length will be necessary to demonstrate its reality. The authors conclude that the method is the best way for period search in BL Lac objects.
