A descriptive review article on computers flown on satellites and their components. The evolution of integrated circuitry from SSI to LSI is sketched, and control computer architecture and functions are outlined, with attention given to computer memories, ALU, CPU, and interfacing. The ANS (Astronomical Netherlands satellite, launched August 1974) was the first European satellite to carry a computer on board. Memories surveyed include: magnetic cores, plated-wire memories, RAM semiconductor memories, MOS ROM memories, sequential-access memories, and magnetic bubbles. Computer reliability and redundancy are discussed, and some representative satellite-flown computers are compared.
