Computer models, designed to synthesize palaeosecular variations of the geomagnetic field, cast doubt on some widely accepted palaeomagnetic dogmas. Westward (or eastward) drift cannot be uniquely deduced from the sense of rotation of the geomagnetic vector: the use of unit vectors in statistical analyses leads to systematic errors which render investigation of the global symmetry of the palaeofield more difficult than previously supposed. At least some geomagnetic 'excursions' may be regarded as large-amplitude secular variations.
