A numerical investigation is presented of the dynamic evolution of a stretched magnetotail configuration by means of a two-dimensional nonlinear resistive MHD code. It was found that plasma sheet thinning, topological changes of the magnetic field configuration, and conversion of magnetic to kinetic energy resulting in strong eastward and tailward flow close to the neutral sheet develop simultaneously and independently of the boundary conditions. The results support the tearing theory of magnetospheric substorms; finally, it is found that two current layers form downstream of the magnetic field separatrix, which may represent structures developing into slow shock waves.
