The performance characteristics of optical systems carried aboard space probes are presently simulated by a three-dimensional CAD-based software package that yields a set of artificially degraded images representative of what a space probe will 'see' as it approaches a target. An animated film illustrating this approach process is obtained by linking the pictorial device to an acquisition system. The case presently simulated involves the optical system of the ESA's Comet Sample Return Mission, and has facilitated the definition and testing of a strategy for the detection of the comet and its identification against a noisy starry background.
