A computer model is used to generate a map of the brightness distribution expected for Earth based measurements of comet P/Halley at the time of GIOTTO encounter. This map is then compared with high resolution CCD images taken around the same time using the 3.9 metre Anglo-Australian Telescope. Dust jets were detected and enhanced from these images, which are of considerable interest for comparison with recent results from the GIOTTO spacecraft.
