The investigation considered is concerned with the design of a mathematical model of the cometary theory developed by Whipple (1950). The model makes it possible to simulate the conditions in a comet and provides an optical picture of coma and tail. The model characteristics are discussed, giving attention to coordinate systems, the heliocentric system, the comet-related coordinate system, picture coordinates, the vaporization process, effects of rotation on vaporization, the expansion phase, free flight conditions, and questions of pictorial representation. The structure of the computer program is considered and examples are provided concerning the results obtained with the program.
