The astrometric Lick-Gaertner Measuring System was built according to a design developed in 1960. Technological advances since then, particularly in small computers and electronic component reliability, offered an opportunity for a substantial upgrading of the system. Most of the electronic circuitry has been replaced using modern components, a PDP 8/I computer has been added to the system, and punched-card equipment has been replaced by magnetic tapes. A versatile interactive programming system is based on the FOCAL language developed by the Digital Equipment Corporation. The efficiency, reliability, and the degree of automation have been greatly increased.
