Attitude and boost control systems using tuned rotor gyros (TRG) as the inertial reference are described. Adoption of the TRG as the inertial reference permits pointing accuracy in the 1/2 to 5 arcmin range, and when integrated with a digital controller, allows almost unlimited reprogrammability of the flight program. A digital attitude control system (ACS) with a microprocessor in the ACS controller and the MIDAS platform and a star tracker as the references was flown. The control algorithm used a current estimator allowing high resolution control from a relatively low resolution reference. A second ACS uses a strapdown TRG set as the inertial reference and a Motorola 6809 microprocessor in the controller. A third system uses the TRGs and a three axes accelerometer set on a roll stable platform and provides the required accuracy for orbital vehicle control and satellite insertion. The digital controller incorporates the Intel 8086/8087 coprocessor.
