A combination of mechanical and computer techniques used in balancing UKIRT is described, and the computer program used is presented. The balance in one axis of an out of balance telescope can be examined by driving the telescope along the axis towards a given point from opposite directions. At the position, for each direction of movement, the difference between the position demanded and the encoder is calculated. The sum of differences is an indication of the out of balance moment. For a perfectly balanced telescope the sum is zero. Several measurements at different positions of the telescope are necessary to determine the position of the center of gravity relative to the pivot point.
