The kinematic equation for Compton scattering of X-rays and gamma-rays in an optically thick cold electron medium is solved analytically in the high- and low-energy limits, and numerically in the general case. The production rate of secondary energetic electrons resulting from gamma-ray downscattering on the cold electrons is calculated. For a high enough temperature of the medium, the secondary electrons lose energy by upscattering blackbody photons and form a secondary photon spectrum, which is also calculated. The problem of reprocessing of X-rays and gamma-rays by Compton scattering is important, e.g., for supernova ejecta, accreting compact objects and in cosmology.
