A relativistic kinetic equation (RKE) for Compton scattering is formulated. Methods are proposed for calculating a redistribution function (RF) describing the redistribution of radiation in frequencies and directions in the case of scattering by relativistic Maxwellian electrons. The RF provides series expansions in three limiting cases: small frequencies (h(nu) is much less than m(c-squared)), nonrelativistic (kT is much less than m(c-squared)), and ultrarelativistic (kT is much greater than m(c-squared)) electrons. A method for calculating an RF for a general case is developed. Explicit expressions are found for an RF for the case of scattering by weakly relativistic electrons; these expressions are used to derive limiting forms of an RKE.
