Isothermal compression data obtained for dry ice above approximately 24 kbar, at room temperature, are fitted to the Birch equation of state to yield an isothermal bulk modulus of 29.3 + or - 1.0 kbar, and a bulk modulus first pressure derivative of 7.8, assuming the volume of the hypothetical dry ice at zero pressure and room temperature to be 31.4 + or 0.2 cu cm/mole. By comparing shock wave data for relevant materials, it is possible to suggest that CO2 is not likely to transform to one of the crystalline forms of SiO2, and may instead decompose into C (diamond) and O2 at high pressures.
