The SONG (Stellar Observations Network Group) project aims at designing and building a global network of 1m telescopes. The primary science goals are to detect extra--solar planets (using the microlensing and radial velocity techniques) and study stellar interiors using asteroseismology. In early 2008 funding was obtained to construct a prototype network node (telescope, dome, instrumentation and software) to be ready by the end of 2011. Here we give an account of the project and the expected broad structure of the network nodes.
