Solar Active Regions: Solar Flares

Scientific paper

A comparison is made between space-time characteristics and flare activity of four complexes of activity (AC). The mean extent of an AC is ≡65 degrees, and the mean lifetime is 4.8 rotations. Within AC large flares were observed on most occasions and proton flares were observed in all cases. Proton flares occur near the descending branch of AC. Large flares do not always follow the rule. The mean duration of the proton flare period is 1 rotation. The number of small flares in AC correlates with the number of sunspot groups. The dependence of large flare occurrence upon the AC evolutionary phase is of interest as regards resolving forecasting problems.
