Outflows from young stars deposit energy and momentum into their surroundings and have a considerable impact on the dynamics, distribution, and chemical composition of the gas in star-forming clouds. Shocks produced by the interaction of high-velocity protostellar winds and the ambient cloud can heat their surroundings and trigger chemical processes that would otherwise not take place in the quiescent medium. Our recent millimeter observations of a small sample of outflow shocks clearly show the existence of complex organic molecules (e.g., methyl formate, ethanol) in outflows. Results indicate that, most likely, these complex species formed on the surface of grains and were then ejected from the grain mantles by the shock. Spectral surveys of shocked regions using Hershcel and other (sub)-millimeter telescopes can therefore be used to probe the composition of dust in molecular clouds. Our study also shows that the impact of outflows needs to be considered when studying complex species in star forming cores.
