A linear analysis of the stability of a thin nonself-gravitating gaseous disk shows that, in the case of the continuous dependence of rotation velocity on the radius, a second unstable mode may be excited in it together with the well-known centrifugal instability mode. A hypothesis is proposed to the effect that the branching arms of spiral galaxies, as well as some other observed features of spiral patterns, may be caused by the simultaneous excitation and superposition of both modes.
