Blue Stragglers, Radial Profiles
Scientific paper
My dissertation focuses on the development of new techniques to determine globular cluster radial profiles and structural parameters and on a search for blue stragglers in M13 utilizing some of these techniques. The techniques involve the analysis of stellar data in crowded regions where star-count samples are incomplete. This requires the determination of the incompleteness of star-count data by performing artificial star experiments. We have developed an optimal method of correcting radial profiles for the effects of incompleteness and have applied it to the profile of the galactic globular cluster M13. We have extended standard maximum likelihood techniques for fitting models to cluster data by incorporating incompleteness and have tested the new method's range of convergence. We have also developed a chi^2 minimization technique that incorporates surface brightness and applied it to photometry of M13 and NGC 6535. Finally, we have conducted the first search for blue stragglers in M13 and identified a candidate population.
