Gravitational Lensing
Scientific paper
The equations for a self-gravitating stationary string and the method used to solve them simultaneously are developed in this work. The solutions of the Einstein -Euler-Lagrange equations are obtained using a Taylor-series method and their analysis and interpretation involve the choice of five free parameters. This work discusses the assumption of regularity at the origin which fixes one of these inherently free parameters. A new solution is found, one for which the spacetime asymptotically approaches pure Minkowski spacetime. Gravitational lensing effects are also present in those string solutions. The second part of this work involves the re-analysis of the redshift induced by a moving cosmic string. This is accomplished by looking at moving sources and observers on a conical spacetime in a fully relativistic approach. By replacing a moving string with the better defined concept of moving sources and observers, it is shown that there is no effect: the only redshift is a Doppler shift due to the motion of the source or observer. A study of the conical spacetime is presented with much attention on the double imaging properties of the spacetime and the lensing effects.
