An overview of the subdivision of wavelength ranges, importance of
extinction, observing techniques, and scientific objectives in both IR
broadband measurement and spectroscopy is given. Infrared and millimeter
wave spectroscopy in the galaxy and IR and millimeter wave observations
for Centaurus A are examined and discussed.
