The ESA satellite Hipparcos will be the first space mission devoted to astrometry and will offer new possibilities with respect to solar neighborhood knowledge. The main characteristics of the satellite is given very briefly. The necessity of preparing an Input Catalogue in advance is explained. Some details related to the content of the Input Catalogue are given.
