The aspherical nature of core collapse explosions is not only a sufficient explanation for a number of observational features, but is also required by the failure of spherical models to explode. The breaking of spherical symmetry might be due to MHD effects, since gravitational collapse dramatically increases the importance of an initially modest amount of rotation, leading to amplification of the magnetic field via the magnetorotational instability (MRI). While rotation of the iron core is expected to be slow enough that it does not develop classical triaxial instabilities, it may be unstable to non--axisymmetric instabilities that are dynamical even when the ratio of rotational to gravitational energy (T/|W|) is as small as one per cent. The resulting oscillation of the proto neutron star due to these non--axisymmetric instabilities may drive magnetoacoustic waves that transport energy and momentum to the stalled shock. We discuss the possible competition or collaboration between magnetic and rotational instabilities and their contribution to the explosion dynamics.
