Near-simultaneous observations of the Io plasma torus by HST and the Plasma Science instrument during the Galileo C23 and I24 orbits allows direct comparison of plasma conditions measured by remote sensing in situ techniques. Specifically, observed torus emission intensities are compared with those predicted by the Voyager-based model of Bagenal (1994) and with models based on the observed plasma measurements on the separate J0, C22, C23, I24 and I27 orbits. Comparison of emission brightness provides estimates of density and composition while the latitudinal distribution of emission intensity can be compared with the observed plasma temperatures. We use multiple passes of Galileo through the torus and series of HST images to explore longitudinal variations in plasma properties. This work is supported by NASA through grants under the Galileo Project and HST Cycle 8.
