Relations between the Bondi-Sachs approach and the Penrose conformal technique for asymptotically flat metrics are reviewed. Conditions on the conformal factor icons/Journals/Common/Omega" ALT="Omega" ALIGN="TOP"/> and the Ricci tensor are examined in order to compare the two approaches. The Bondi-Sachs coordinates are constructed (up to O(icons/Journals/Common/Omega" ALT="Omega" ALIGN="TOP"/> 3 )) for a class of Robinson-Trautman metrics. Some solutions within this class (with pure radiation fields) are given.
