Temperature and geopotential height data from the Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) instrument are used to quantify differences in stratopause and mesopause temperature and altitude between solar maximum and solar minimum conditions. The SABER observations only span half a solar cycle so comparisons are limited to the solar maximum 2002 and 2003 and the solar minimum in 2007, 2008, and 2009. To address the inherent uncertainty in results based on the limited data record, the analysis focuses on regions of the atmosphere where variability in stratopause and mesopause temperature and altitude is small. Preliminary results suggest that, during solar max, the stratopause is 4-6 K warmer and 2-5 km lower while the mesopause is 5-10 K warmer and 2-6 km lower compared to during solar min. A longer record of high altitude temperature measurements is required to obtain results that are statistically significant and to account for QBO and ENSO contributions.
