An investigation is conducted concerning the relative merits of current techniques for calculating high-energy nuclear reaction cross sections. It is found that a use of semiempirical equations has advantages if interactions with a large set of different target nuclides have to be considered. The computation time in such a case is about 3 orders of magnitude less than for Monte Carlo calculations. Only semiempirical techniques are currently applicable to fission and fragmentation reactions. Monte Carlo calculations must be used for neutron-induced reactions, because semiempirical calculations for such reactions have not been developed.
