The Global Ultraviolet Imager (GUVI) on board NASA's Thermosphere, Ionosphere, Mesosphere, Energetic and Dynamics (TIMED) spacecraft, launched in December, 2001, is a far-ultraviolet, scanning imaging spectrograph that provides horizon-to-horizon images in five selectable wavelength intervals. GUVI auroral products include maps of the auroral oval, the characteristic energy and flux of the precipitating electrons, and ionospheric electron density profiles. We compare measured energetic electron precipitation distributions from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) spacecraft with the distributions inferred from GUVI during periods when the data were acquired nearly simultaneously. The inferred and measured spectra are then folded through the Strickland auroral energy deposition code to produce comparative ionospheric electron density profiles.
