In order to study the dust distribution in the nearby ɛ Cha I dark cloud the authors have performed star counts on a blue ESO/SRC sky survey plate. In two opaque spots at the centre of the cloud the blue extinction exceeds 8m. Comparison of the H2CO and OH line intensities (Toriseva et al., 1985) with the extinction reveals a good correlation between the molecular gas and the dust component. In order to study the connection between molecular gas and newly formed stars, the authors have compared the published distributions of Hα emission line stars, 2-μm IR objects, warm objects found by the IRAS satellite, and X-ray objects found by the Einstein satellite, with the H2CO peak antenna temperature distribution. Significant correlations are found.
