A method is described which makes it possible to treat accurately the radiation transfer in planetary nebulae for cases of intermediate optical thickness, where a neglect of the diffuse radiation field or its treatment in the 'on the spot approximation' produces substantial errors in the calculated line strengths. The results for different model nebulae are compared. In particular, it is shown how various density distributions affect the results. It is found that large density gradients considerably change the temperature and ionization structure within the nebula.
