The observed intrinsic colour (b-y)0 (Crawford, 1979) corresponds to the computed theoretical index (b-y) (Kurucz, 1979) in the region of A-type stars calibrated by Crawford; this correlation is not valid in the temperature range 7000-8500 K when the metal abundances are greater than or equal to 3 times the solar abundances. Therefore for Am stars, the m1 index cannot be quantitatively expressed in metal overabundances.
