Aurorae: Alfven Waves

Scientific paper

In the small-amplitude limit, the solution of SKAWs (Solitary Kinetic Alfvén Waves) can be expressed by the KdV soliton solution. However, some recent observations from the Freja spacecraft showed that the strong electromagnetic spikes in the aurora should be finite-amplitude SAWs. Here, the comparison between the finite-amplitude and the small-amplitude SKAWs is made, and their main characteristics are presented.
