We examine substorms with maximal electrojet intensity occurring poleward and equatorward of the standard AE station Abisko (magn.lat. 65.21 deg). This is the first statistical study, including more than 800 substorms, in which the substorms are categorized in the terms of latitude. The most striking differences were identified in number of events and in onset times. Other studied parameters were duration, intensity and substorm size. The substorm intensity and size were measured by using the IL index, which is a proxy of westward electrojet index AL, but it is constructed from 22 magnetometers of MIRACLE/IMAGE magnetometer array. The main results of this study are: (1) 90% of the onsets were north of the Abisko; (2) The poleward substorms remain much weaker, but most importantly (3) the onset of the poleward substorms is, on the average, an hour earlier than the onset of equatorward substorms.
