Recent studies of the opposition effect of the Moon, other planetary satellites, and asteroids are mostly based on two mechanisms: shadowing and coherent backscattering. We have developed a new method of approximating the width and form of the opposition peak and evaluating the practicality of the method in each case. The procedure is applied to numerous observed phase curves. Simulated phase curves are also presented, based on computer modelling, shown along with the observations. The results can be applied in further studies and interpretation of scattering properties of solar system ices and bright surfaces, as well as the Trans-Neptunian objects.
