Among different optical designs proposed for a far UV spectroscopic observatory, an objective grating instrument has interesting performances for the study of solar system objects and extended sources since it combines imaging capability with high spectral and spatial resolution. In the present paper, the authors give a schematic description of such an instrument and demonstrate its capabilities through the discussion of the method of data analysis to be used. Application of data simulation programs to a simple model of the Io torus is presented in order to clearly define the basic concept of the instrument which calls for integrated spectral and spatial data. These simulations demonstrate instrument performances and confirm the large advantage of its imaging capabilities when compared to a slit spectrograph.
