Satellite determinations of ionospheric and plasmaspheric total electron content (TEC) are compared for observation stations at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, Richmond, Florida, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Haifa, Israel, and Kiruna, Sweden. The determinations were made using the Faraday-polarization-rotation and dispersive-group-delay techniques. Comparisons of mean monthly variations in the TEC values recorded at the different stations show that the relatively higher values recorded at Sao Paulo were due to passage of the satellite-observer ray path through the Equatorial Anomaly region, that anomaly-content crests are larger in the summer hemisphere, and that depressed values obtained at Kiruna were caused by passage of the satellite ray path through the density trough near the auroral zone. It is suggested that the plasmaspheric and ionospheric electron densities are increased during the formation and maintenance of the equatorial anomaly.
