Recent discoveries regarding the possibility of life on Mars in geologically recent times makes determining the overall water content of Mars an important subject in understanding its history. Our research presents data useful in characterizing the water content of Martian atmospheric clouds.
Images in the 1.5 to 4.1 micron range were taken at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility over a six-month period around the recent Mars opposition of 2003 using NSFCAM, a facility instrument. Mars was imaged through the continuously variable filter, producing high spatial resolution images with a spectral resolution of approximately 100. These data are used to produce band-ratio maps highlighting various spectral features that characterize global distributions of Martian ices. Band-ratio maps were produced from observations over several months, showing changes in these features over the course of the Martian season.
