After a brief discussion of the early concepts of solar energy collecting devices in space for use on earth (Glaser, 1968; NASA/DOE, 1978), involving a space power satellite, the paper presents the concept of the Compact Space Power Station (SPS) proposed by Pospisil et al. (1978) and Pospisil and Pospisilova (1980) and presents the design of a small experimental Compact SPS proposed by Pospisil et al. (1980). The experimental Compact SPS consists of a shell-like structure, the outer surface of which is covered with solar cells while the inner surface houses the transmitting beam convertors and microwave sources. The direct current is led only some 60 m through the structure. The stiffeners are made of adjustable length, making it possible to change the satellite power delivery curve in operation. The two main questions of the SPS's fate - whether and how are discussed.
