The difficulties in identifying protostars are reviewed, and the IRAS contribution to star formation is discussed. Wynn-Williams' defining properties for protostars are recalled, and associations of masers, high velocity CO, and shocked molecular hydrogen with compact infrared sources are pointed out. A dense, hot-centered cloud model is proposed to explain dust emission from these sources.
